Localisation of Function (2021)

Combining my practice with my love for psychology, this project looks at specific parts of the brain and our innate vulnerability to biology. The parts of the brain in this series are all parts that serve functions that are vital to humankind. The localization of function is a theory that each part of the brain serves a very specific function, and by that theory, damage to these areas would cause severe impairment to that function. Therefore, I wanted my audience to look at these vital parts of their brain and to create a sort of appreciation for them, as well as to consider the complex fragility of the human brain.

This is the parietal lobe, responsible for basic movement and understanding sensation. Damage to this area can cause Gerstmann's Syndrome, which includes right-left confusion, difficulty with writing, aphasia, and the inability to perceive objects normally.

This is the amygdala, a structure which helps respond to things in the environment including generating fear and anger. Damage to the amygdala can cause problems with memory processing, emotional reactions and decision making.

This is the occipital lobe, responsible for visuospatial processing, distance and depth perception, colour determination, object and face recognition and memory formation. Damage to this area causes vision impairments, visual distortions and visual inattention.

The hypothalamus is responsible for maintaining the body's internal balance. It also maintains temperature, hydration, blood pressure and appetite. Damage to this area can cause extreme body temperature changes, adrenal insufficiency, hypothyroidism and diabetes insipidus.
